Thérèse's “Little Way” was about the small, routine opportunities that she was given daily to show her devotion to God. Her trials took place at the convent, but they are the exact same trials we go through as mothers, wives, friends, and co-workers. Thérèse would seek out the most disagreeable and unfriendly sister at the convent and choose to sit by her. She would go out of her way to be kind to the sisters who looked down on her as a silly child.
Throughout history, Thérèse has been dismissed by many intellectuals and scholars because her “Little Way” didn’t seem to have the theological depth that other doctors of the church exemplified. Over time, people have come to realize that her simple ways of dealing with convent hardships and relationships provide a road map for a revolution of happiness in our own daily struggles. If there ever was a Saint to keep in mind throughout our day, she is the one. She appreciates every time we smile when it is difficult to smile, every time we are generous with friends, every time we give the benefit of the doubt to someone who may not seem to deserve it, and every time we show patience to the children, partners, and extended family who cross our paths and cause us frustration and confusion.
Thérèse said, “After my death I will let fall a shower of roses. I will spend my heaven doing good on earth.” Thérèse is here, ready and willing to help us, and she never diminishes even the tiniest of struggles--she sees them as opportunities to bring Jesus into our hearts.
